A friend of mine posted this on my facebook page. I found it amazing to watch the dexterity and speed of these drummers! I have to say this video gives me new-found respect for Ed Shaughnessy. I have to check out more of his playing!
I also loved to see how in-synch the two played the unison parts–amazing! Yes, of course these drummers are two of the best of the best and this should be an easy skill for them. However, it is one thing for a drummer to lead a big band alone, it is another for that soloistic-like drummer to play in a section! Something most musicians take for granted!
This is an old video, I’m guessing from the 70’s based on their haircuts and clothes. Check out the necklace Ed Shaughnessy is wearing! It reminds me of the bling one would see 80’s rappers wearing! Hilarious!
Lastly, I am curious about the drumsets. I have limited knowledge of the history of Buddy Rich so I’m curious about learning more. As I understand it, the drumsets he often used were Rogers. And I have to say the one in this clip looks like a Rogers to me. Does anyone have a more educated guess as to what drumset Buddy Rich is using?
And how about Ed Shaughnessy’s drumset? It seems like the two are very similar when one compares the hardware. Also notice that the small black rectangular label on both drumset’s top tom toms look alike. However Shaughnessy’s drumset has the title “Ludwig” on the bass drum head–but they don’t look like Ludwig drums to me….the brand name on the tom tom is too small. I’m a bit confused. Does anyone know or have a more educated guess as to which drumsets are actually being used?
Both drum sets were
Ludwig in that clip
Glad u liked it-we
Had fun!!! Ed S.
Mr. Shaughnessy! Thank you for commenting on this post! It is an honor to hear from you regarding the blog entry I wrote. I never expected to hear directly from the source when I asked about the drumsets! Thanks!
